THE Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Chief Anayo Nebe, has called on the Federal Government to establish an ecology commission that would tackle erosion in different parts of the country.

The Speaker who spoke with newsmen in Awka, on Monday, described erosion in the South-East and other ecological problems in the country as a major threat to the socio-economic transformation of the country.

He said that if nothing was done in the South Eastern states in the next 10 years, most of the villages in the states would be submerged, creating, in the process, hardship for the villagers and their children.

In a related issue, the Chairman of Ogbaru Market, Mr. Eugene Nwanekezi, has called on the Anambra State government to come to their aid.

According to him, “our goods in the market are being destroyed by flood each time it rains and so many traders have lost all they have.”

Speaking with newsmen in Onitsha, Mr Nwanekezi explained that the main entrance gate to the market bordering Onitsha-Asaba-Enugu expressway opposite Lagos park, was being threatened by gully erosion which resulted in excessive flooding and had also flooded and closed the fish section of the market.
