Akure Residents Count Losses After Rainstorms

Hundreds of people have been rendered homeless, while six were wounded in Akure, the Ondo State capital, following the havoc caused by rainstorms on Thursday evening.

A pregnant woman and her three children escaped by the whiskers, when their house collapsed, during the rainfall that lasted for 30 minutes

The affected places include the Government House, schools, churches, residential buildings, shops, Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) poles, commercial vehicles and many others.

No fewer than 100 buildings were affected, while the fence of the deputy governor’s section of the Government House was also damaged.
A PHCN pole in the premises of the Government House and a tree fell through the fence across the road leading to Igbatoro.

In another incident, a PHCN pole in front of a filling station in the popular NEPA area fell on a commercial vehicle, damaging it.

The areas worst affected by the rainstorms were Ijoka, Oluwatuyi and Hospital Road, while power supply in most parts of the town had been cut off because of the damaged PHCN equipments.
