Oyo Govt Threatens To Sue Afenifere

By Adeolu Adeyemo - 11.10.2008

Oyo State government on Friday threatened to drag the Yoruba socio-cultural group known as Afenifere to court over its pronouncement that the American Zia Metallurgical Processing that the state government claimed to be an inventor of the latest technology capable of converting refuse to ethanol and generate electricity for the state, was not in existence.

The state government which spoke through the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Alhaji Mukaila Aborode at a press conference held at the governor’s office in Ibadan, said that it would soon file all its legal papers to tackle the group on the matter.

The commissioner who described the outburst of the group as malicious, de-grading, wicked and unfounded, said he regretted that such group could mislead the members of the public.

He said, it was unfortunate and surprising that Afenifere could involve itself in falsehood as it did and charged the members of the public to disregard its argument that enquiries conducted so far by it had shown that the American Seer Metallurgical Processing may not be in existence.”

Alhaji Mukaila said that the name of the company was not American Seer Metallurgical Processing as announced by the group, but American Zia Metallurgical Processing and charged it to always do copious investigations on any matter before challenging it.

The commissioner who affirmed that no antics of the enemies could deter the present administration in the state from forging ahead to take care of the members of the public, said they were not in the corridor of power to embezzle public money.

Commenting further on the plan of the state government for the people of the state, the commissioner stressed that, “We have adopted scientific method to rid the city of filth and to leave behind a kind of legacy that can stand the test of time. Since we came on board, we have tried our best to provide a kind of permanent scientific solution to the issue of waste management here as it is affecting Oyo State and most especially the city of Ibadan.”
