The Enugu-Onitsha expressway is under a threat of being cut into two by gully erosion at the Ezeagu, Enugu State, axis of the road.

Rehabilitation work on the road began two years ago but was abandoned and the section of the highway currently in use is under severe threat of gully erosion, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) found.

Some motorists told NAN that many accidents and deaths had occurred on the highway and called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to address the situation.

They said the damage on the road was more prominent around the Water Works Section at the UmumbaNdiagu stretch of the highway.

A commercial bus driver, Mr  Onyebuchi Umunna, who operates on the route,  said he was afraid of driving on the road at night because of the fear of falling into a ditch.

Another driver, Mr Nwanne Udah, said he was usually apprehensive whenever he approached the bad section of the road.

The drivers urged the Federal Government to call  the contractors back to site to enable them  open the closed portion of the road.

The Federal Controller of Works in Enugu, Mr Joe Onyejekwe, told NAN on  telephone recently that he would not comment on the situation.

''I do not grant telephone interviews and I am not in Enugu for any interview,’’ Onyejekwe said.

Mr Richard Obibisong, the FRSC unit Commander at 9th Mile Corner, Enugu, refused releasing the accident records on the road.
