The residents of  Kajola, Alamoye  and High School areas of   Akure have appealed to Ondop State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, to provide new transformers for the PHCN installations in the area.

The residents,  numbering more than 100,   took  to  the streets on Tuesday in  protest  against the total darkness in the areas.

The protesters, who  carried placards with different  inscriptions and were  chanting solidarity songs,  marched through Oba Adesida Road and Oke Eda to the Governor’s Office.

Spokesman of the communities, Mr Dele Fadare,  told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)  at Oke Eda that the three areas had  been in darkness for over a year now.

“The transformers given to us by Dr Segun Agagu over five years ago had broken down,” he said.

Fadare, who was the chairman of the residents’ association of the three communities, said the protesters were not violent, but wanted the governor to come to their aid and give them new transformers.

According to him, many of the residents had  suffered untold hardship as a result of the total blackout in the areas.

 Fadare said they had   made representations to the governor on several occasions but without any result.

He said the residents of the areas  decided to embark on the peaceful protest to make public  their grievances  and appeal for assistance.

Fadare  added  that representatives of the communities had attempted  to see the governor, but were prevented by his aides.
