The Caretaker Chairman of Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela, has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on road networks in the country.

Olowofela told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan at the weekend that the declaration of the emergency would galvanise efforts to repair roads nationwide and boost transportation.

“The declaration of the emergency will improve the condition of the road networks which will in turn reduce rural-urban migration across the country,” Olowofela said.

He said good road networks in the country would attract better infrastructure and investments to rural areas.

Olowofela commended the Oyo State government’s effort on road construction and rehabilitation, noting that the sector ought to be prioritised

“Every part of the state has benefited immensely from Ajimobi’s transformation agenda, mostly in the area of road construction,” he said.

He condemned the call for the scrapping of councils, noting that it was disastrous to scrap a tier of government serving as the face of the

government to the people at the grassroots.

“The absence of local government will hinder grass roots development. There will also be no link between the government and the people,” he said.

Olowofela described local government administration as challenging, adding that it was an avenue to serve the people.

“It affords you the opportunity to serve your people through the implementation of people-oriented programmes.

“ You have to do your best and leave those you can not do while telling the people your limitations,” he said.
