Kehinde Abdul a.k.a 1stbon, is one of the fastest rising comedians in Nigeria and is already exporting his talent across the shores of the country as he is becoming the toast of event organisers abroad. In this interview with Rotimi Ige, he talks about his life, comedy and music.

Background
My name is Kehinde Oluwatosin Abdul, and I am from Ogun State. I am from a family of seven. I attended Airforce Nursery/Primary School and from there to Iju Grammar School. I am a graduate of Banking and Finance from The Polytechnic, Ibadan.

How did you come about the name Firstborn?
Oh! I didn't say that I am a twin? Ok! I am, I came after my twin sister and in Yoruba land we believe who ever comes last (twins) is the first born. The Bible also says that the last shall be the first.

When did you discover your talent for comedy?
It all started when I was in secondary school, I was in the Press Club and that helped me in facing numerous people. I remember a particular programme in church where we could not afford the bill for an MC/Comedian and I was called to take his place being a jovial person. Please don't ask me what happened (Laughs).

Your influences?
Holy Mallam, Big B, Koffi and Owen G.

How do you get your jokes?
I get inspiration from things around me, my background, past experiences ,people, places and sometimes, during my quiet moments.

Most comedians are delving into music. Are you only a comedian?
I'm a comedian and I'm into music.

Tell us about your first major performance as a comedian?
My first major performance was in London, where I had Nigerian and British audience. It really went well because my jokes and gestures were on point. The gestures knocked the oyinbos out (laughs).

Your worst performance?
Hmm, that was my first time on stage as a comedian, and I have improved ever since.

How have you grown since then?
I have grown in leaps and bounds. I can only get better after every performance

How is the comedy business in Nigeria?
It’s lucrative, recognised, embraced and it makes you smile to the bank.

How do you cope with the numerous talents that abound in the industry?
We are one. Seeing other talents makes you work and improve more on yourself, we are all aspiring to be at the top.

How do you stay ahead of the competition?
Being unique and knowing your strength goes a long way in determining your worth and position in the labour market. (laughs)

Is comedy a passion or a business?
Its both.

If not comedy, what would you have been?
A banker.

Have you ever been threatened because of the nature of your jokes?
I do ethical jokes that suit all, so no.

Is comedy expensive?
Yes and affordable

Major comedic acts now have their own shows as a way of endorsing themselves. Are you planning such?
Yes o! I am planing to do more because I organised my first show in 2007. So I plan to do more in the nearest future.

What challenges do women comedians face in the industry dominated by men?
I will ask a female comedian and get back to you (laughs).

What music projects are you into currently?
I am working on my album. I have four songs already and a musical video enjoying air play (Jenifa).

What is the worst rumour you have heard about yourself?
They say I am not handsome.

Is there anyway that you feel artistes should give back to society?
Yes, I give back to the society considering the fact that I impart joy to every person I encounter.

I love combining the right colours, thereby looking smart and presentable.
