Albert “Jack” Stanley, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KBR, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for bribery. He was sentenced to 30 months in prison for his role in a decade-long scheme to bribe Nigerian government officials to win $6 billion in contracts for a liquefied natural gas facility at Bonny Island.

US District Judge, Keith Ellison, also sentenced a former KBR consultant a 21-month prison sentence for acting as a middleman.

Jeffrey Tesler, 63, a consultant and lawyer, pleaded guilty almost a year ago to one-count charge of conspiracy to violate and one-count charge of violating the bribery law known as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).

Despite fighting extradition from Britain, Tesler was sent to the United States in March 2011, where he entered a guilty plea. He faced up to five years in prison on each count and had already agreed to forfeit almost $150 million as part of his plea bargain.

Earlier, Judge Ellison sentenced another Briton, 73-year-old Wojciech Chodan, to probation for taking part in the bribery scheme when he worked at a unit of KBR.

He had also unsuccessfully fought extradition, but cooperated with the US investigation on arrival in Texas.

PLEA BARGAINING

Plea bargaining is not all about pushing the accused to forfiet just 3 million naira when he stole billions. Take inventory of ALL his assets and probably that of his immediate families and start the negotiation from there. The Goverment should also be looking at enacting Proceed of Crime Act which will enahance Assets Confistication and Immediate sale. It will help if Goverment can start looking at what will make corruption a none profitable venture.

The list of Nigerian officials who demanded and collected the bribes, pushing the foreign and local companies to over-state contract prices by trillions of naira, which allowed those same officials to then steal the trillions of naira from their own population, are in the public domain. Some of them are our "leaders" that we see every day on television and read about in the newspapers. Others have had their day in the public sun and continue to pull the strings of the country from behind closed doors. The list is available. No Nigerian newspaper will publish it.
