NIGERIA was on Sunday thrown into a national tragedy when a commercial plane belonging to a domestic carrier, DANA Air crashed into the densely populated residential area of Iju/Ishaga killing all

the 153 passengers on board.

The ill-fated plane was said to have crashed into an electric pole before crashing into buildings.

The development came even as most of the victims of the plane crash, according to information gathered, were said to be going to Lagos to resume at their various places of work for the week.

According to the manifest released by the airline management, among the victims were three army generals, the Group Public Relations Officer for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr Levi Ajuonuma.

Others include Abdulrasat Lawal, Abitayo Olatoci, Adekoya Ayoola, Amina Doris, Elizabeth Adaeze, Ajala Adenike and Adekunbi Adebiyi.

According to information gathered, the plane, which took off from the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, was heading to the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos when it crashed.

Apart from the 153 passengers on board who perished, scores of people on ground also lost their lives as the ill-fated plane crashed into their area.

Sunday’s crash came after the nation’s aviation industry celebrated five years of no accident.

The Dana crash is reminiscent of the EAS plane which similarly crash-landed into a residential area of the Kano city called Gwammaja.

At the time of filing this report, the number of casualties on ground were yet to be ascertained while security men, including the police, cordoned off the place and there was not yet any clue to the cause of the crash.

The nation’s aviation authority had been enjoying accident free flight operations after the two major crashes that involved Sosoliso and ADC airlines between 2005 and 2006.

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan has declared a three-day period of national mourning for all those who lost their lives in the Dana Air plane crash in Lagos on Sunday.

Already, he has cancelled all his public engagements scheduled for today and directed that the Nigerian flag be flown at half-mast for the three days of national mourning.

A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, in Abuja on Sunday, stated that the president has ordered the fullest possible investigation into the crash.

It said that in compliance with the president’s directive, the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah has already left Abuja for Lagos to oversee the crash investigations and present an interim report to the Federal Government as quickly as possible.

"The president joins all Nigerians in mourning all those who lost their lives in the plane crash which has sadly plunged the nation into further sorrow on a day when Nigerians were already in grief over the loss of many other innocent lives in the church bombing in Bauchi State," the statement said.

President Jonathan assured air travellers in the country that every possible effort would be made to ensure that the right lessons are learnt from the tragic loss of valuable lives in Sunday’s plane crash and that further measures would be put in place to boost aviation safety in the country.

He prayed that God Almighty would grant the families of the victims of the plane crash the courage and fortitude to bear their irreparable losses.

FG will investigate cause of crash - Minister
The Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah has said that the Federal Government will institute a very thorough investigation into the cause of Sunday’s Dana aircraft MD 83 with registration number 5NRAM, which crashed in Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos.

Speaking at the headquarters of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Oduah said that at about 3:43p.m. (local time) the pilot of flight 0992 from Abuja to Lagos declared emergency at about 11 nautical miles to the airport.

She explained that within a minute, the aircraft disappeared from the radar until it crashed in the area.

She said, “Federal Government will institute a very thorough investigation to ensure there is no reoccurrence. They were just 11 nautical miles away before they declared May Day. And within a minute, it disappeared from the radar. It consists of 153 passengers and six crew members.

“Police, NEMA and local residence were at the site. Unfortunately, no survival. It is our prayer therefore that the souls of those who died will rest in peace. We pray that God will give the families of the bereaved the fortitude to bear the lost.”

However, an unconfirmed reported said that the black box of the aircraft had been found by the police.

However, the families of the bereaved were sighted at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Two wailing for their loved once who were in the aircraft.

The Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Dr Harold Demuren, confirmed that all the passengers’ were dead and that the plane belongs to Dana airlines.

He added that the plane was coming from Abuja to Lagos before the crash occurred.

According to him, “I came to find out what has happened but the situation is pathetic.”

Aviation Crashes

NAAN and all Authorities concern needs to explain the shortcoming in Aviation industry in Nigeria. Flying in Nigeria is like taking a suicide step with prayers onboard for peaceful uptake and landing of any, any airline in Nigeria. This is not the first time we have experience shocky landing of flight in Nigeria. The government either take this serious or see their loved ones perrishing in avoidable technical causes. My advise, all plane flying in Nigeria should be screened, old ones completely taking off air without any form of politics and irrespective of the stakeholders.


MAY GOD SAVE NIGERIA... ITS VERY UNFORTUNATE THAT ORDINARY GHANA HAS MORE IN RANKING IN AVIATION SERVICES THAN NIGERIA...

i hereby commiserate with the families of the victims. Dr Demuren should pls ensure the black box is secured since this is the first time we SAW the black box of a Nigerian crash. Right of possession is being fought for by different agencies - as if we have no defined who ought to handle it on retrieval from accident site. Pls ensure it is safely kept and QUICKLY passed to manufacturers of the plane for decoding. I am sure you all know it cannot be read after 1 month.Immediately seize the maintenance record of the plane from DANA

My heart goes to the families that woke up on Sunday morning with great expectation for the new week but the tragedy of the plane crash took them out of this world.
Let us think about it again and again. This is not the first time such disaster will happen in this country and we are yet to even have any report on the previous ones or any recommendation to prevent subsequent ones.
It’s sad that in Nigeria, things happen and we just forget about them like that without making adequate effort to prevent subsequent occurrences. Elsewhere across the Globe, investigations are carried out and made known to the general public but Nigeria is a different and sad case. What happen to Sosoliso, Bellview plane crashes and the host of others?
We only see all the occurrences without effort on how to prevent them from happening again. Honestly, it is sad and our only hope can only be a responsible government that does beyond a shadow investigation.
May God help the helpless and the entire nation.

WHAT A DISASTER ON AN ASSUMED DAY OF THE LORD

A Yoruba adage says “E je ka kiyesi ogun lara isanan”. It is indeed sad that this type of wreckage occurred on a day of the Lord and killed numbers of people. In addition to this; we were also told that suicide bombers forcefully entered into another worship centre on the same day of the Lord in Bauchi and killed numbers of worshippers; recently last week ; it was numbers of petrol tankers that tumbled and exploded along other vehicles at Ibadan express road and people died.

That adage interpretation simply means “taking a thorough examination or thoughts on matches and discover the ability of producing charms through it.” There is a question that needs to be asked, is God not aware of these disasters?

This is simply an idiom, that translates to the fact that God himself has confirmed it in His words according to (Heb 9:27) that “And it is appointed to men once to die, but after this the judgement.” This equally means that everybody will surely die at a point, but God is not concerned or interested in the type of death that kills man when it is time to die. One more thing to know is that no man knows what will kill him, when he will die and how he will die.

As a result of this; we all need to get prepared for our own departure from this world of sin every moment, as it can be anybody’s turn. The most important part of it is that we need to live our life in total obedience and submission to God with love, humility and pure undiluted holiness, so that whenever death comes to us, we will be justified before God and we can then be a citizen of the promised kingdom of God.

For those that have suddenly gone, the bible says “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them (Rev 14:13)” I pray that the Lord will give their families, loved ones and the entire nation the fortitude to bear the loss, and may the Lord console us all in Jesus name. Amen.

In fact as a Nigerian, I do not only feel sad but also embarrassed. Why must peoples lives be toyed with like this? It had become almost a daily occurrence in my country for ordinary people, hapless, poor brothers and sisters to be slaughtered on the alter of greed, corruption and selfishness, because all these are what the government represents in the past decades, may God have mercy upon the masses of Nigeria. I read through the list and what i saw,i wept for.it is very sorrowful to see that our current leaders as well as great prospects for our tomorrow were amongst this crash.life is unfair but God has and will never turn his back on us.It happened in a period when the country is doing its best to resuscitate every aspect of its existence.for the families whom had their loved ones involved in this tragedy,im speechless on what to say because i could immagine how it feels to speak to a loved one and the next minute,he/she is no more..With God almighty watching,i surrender your cases to him because he is the best to explain as well as provide adequate fortitude for the losses.GOD IS WATCHING..plsss,wipe your tears and let him take control..

The question Nigerian government should ask is does DANA Air operate in the UK or the US if the answer is no then why Nigeria. Because everybody thinks the black man is stupid. I live in England and from the age of 5yrs all nationalities bring their the kids up to think black people are less intelligent as a result most business minded people come to Africa and give crap service aided by a corupt govt. until out leaders clean up their acts am afraid we will always have crap planes etc because to these guys we are all monkeys who deserve to be treated as such thanks to the likes of Jonathan goodluck who smiles and show is teeth while the white man laughs back not with him but at him because the white man is thinking this guy reminds me of a monkey or goliwog. I believe in fate but the situation in Nigeria now needs a lot of critical thinking,measures,and evaluation. Lets there be conference where people from all works of life will decide what we want and how.Let there be implementation of good ideas.We are facing silent wars and no soldier show up.Let there be task forces checking Aircraft,Roads,Foods, etc for safety .And it should all be enforced.I am very unhappy that my dear Country is witnessing these senseless ,avoidable loss.
