‘Accreditation of medical laboratory supports FG’s objectives’

altHealth Minister,Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu has said ensuring that all tiers of medical laboratories in the country were accredited was to improve the quality of healthcare in the country and in line with one of the cardinal objectives of the present administration.

Speaking at a national consensus meeting, on mentoring of all tiers of medical laboratories in the country to ensure their accreditation, the Minister stated that the need for accreditation has come to the fore in the last three to five years in connection with quality of service and product in the health industry.

According to him,” Nigeria has come of age; the citizens are becoming more aware of their rights to quality service; we will not wait till clients start taking us to court in the health sector before we do what we are rightly supposed to do.”

The Minister declared, “The benefits of having our laboratories accredited for quality service cannot be over emphasised. It does not only ensure quality service which our people have a right to but also promotes international recognition and confidence.”

Professor Chukwu, commending the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) in ensuring medical laboratories are fully accredited, reiterated the need for team work in the health sector. He stated that all hands should be on deck to achieve President Good luck Jonathan’s transformation agenda.

He reiterated the resolve of the government to stop the capital flight that occurs when Nigerians have to travel abroad to treat even minor ailments and also achieve harmony in the health sector.
