The Association of Muslim Professionals has expressed dismay over the inability of security operatives to curb the excess of the Boko Haram sect.

The association, in a statement in Abuja entitled: Leaders as “Servants”, said that the group had nothing to do with Islam.

“Our leaders know this and we strongly feel they should only do the needful,” it said.

While noting that President Goodluck Jonathan had on several occasions said that they knew them ”our security operatives, who get international awards whenever they are sent out of the country should just pick up the courage to do the needful.

“If you do not want to offend some people, you are obviously offending the nation, Nigeria,” the group said.

On the strike embarked upon by organised labour over removal of oil subsidy, the association said that other tiers of governments should be ready to face similar probes as is going on with the presidency now. It explained that governors, legislators, local government chairmen, councilors should be asked questions, more than ever before, on how they perform and those that could not give reasonable accounts should be shown the way out.

The body noted that Nigerians were awake, saying “we want to encourage Nigerians to ask questions from their leaders.

“We should put sentiments aside in our decisions and ensure competent, trustworthy individuals, are elected. Although, followers should comply with the directives of their leaders, it does not translate to blind subservience,” it said.

According to the group, there are legitimate means of seeking redress, and that is what must be followed.

“Government should know, that citizens would not “sidon look” when things are getting out of hands. Both the President and his ministers should now, more than ever before, be careful with the type of policies they make. “We believe governing a people can be  easier, if the fear of God is put at the forefront of all actions. The welfare of majority of the governed should be what concerns government most,” it said.
