Awareness about rabies not enough - Vet Surgeon

Share

A veterinarian and the newly-elected chairman of the Veterinary Medical Association of Oyo State, Dr Remi Egunyinka, at the weekend, stated that awareness about rabies was not enough, saying that there was the need for continuous enlightenment on the disease.

Dr. Egunyinka, who said this at the inauguration of new executive members of the association-cum-2010 World Rabies Day, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, said: “Rabies is a zoonotic disease: It is a disease that can be transferred between animal and man. Rabies, as we all know, is a fatal but preventable disease. As of today, there is nobody that can live with rabies. Once you’re rabied, the end is death. We can remove rabies from medical records if you do the right thing at the right time.”

Dr. Egunyinka, who advocated the establishment of Ministry of Animal Health and Production, in his acceptance speech on behalf of other newly- elected executive said, “veterinary has greatly contributed to agriculture through prevention of animal disease,” reiterating that “it is not safe for anyone to buy meat from a source that is not under the inspection of veterinarians.”
