More than 50 suspects have been arrested in connection with current crime wave, particularly, kidnapping and other violent crimes in Abia State, the new General Officer Commanding, 82 Division of Nigeria Army, Major-General Sarkin Yaki Bello, has said.

Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune in Aba, Major-General Bello also said that many brands of exotic cars, motorcycles, arms and ammunition were recovered from criminals’ hideouts located in various bushes of Abia South senatorial zone of the state.

The army officer, who just resumed duty as GOC, 82 Division of Nigeria Army, was until his appointment the commander of the JTF Operation Restore Hope in charge of Niger-Delta.

He also said that valuable documents and photographs that could aid the operation were also recovered from the kidnappers’ hideouts, adding that the suspects, arms and ammunition, vehicles, and motorcycles recovered would be handed over to the police for parading after preliminary investigations by the JTF.

Major-General Bello, who said people, life and activities were gradually returning to the commercial city of Aba and neighbouring communities, added that the military operation in the area was to restore peace and security, stressing that people should not entertain any fears.

Meanwhile, Governor Theodore Orji has said that the federal troops, comprising the army, navy and the police of the Joint Task Force (JTF) had come to stay in Aba and other neighbouring areas of the state to sustain the security and peace.
