The Federal Government has proscribed the Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) with immediate effect. The Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, who announced the proscription after the national security meeting in Abuja, on Thursday, said   government’s decision to ban the Peace Corps was taken at the meeting and that they had been banned from participating in the conduct of any election or any public function anywhere in the country.

They are also banned from parading themselves in uniform of any kind or involving themselves in traffic or crowd control in public places across the country.

Ringim, has, consequently, directed all Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in charge of zones, Commissioners of Police and other security agencies involved in the election exercise to arrest any member of the proscribed Peace Corps of Nigeria if sighted in uniform during and after the election.

The IGP further warned that any person or group of persons found parading, operating or conducting themselves under the name of Peace Corps of Nigeria or disguising as an NGO covering election or seen controlling crowd and traffic during or after elections should be arrested and prosecuted.

However, the PCN has denied being banned, telling the general public to discountenance the press statement by the Nigeria Police.

A statement signed by the Deputy National Public Relations officer of the corps, Omale John Ewaoche, made available to Nigerian Tribune on Thursday said that the action of the police amounted to an executive recklessness and gross disobedience to the judgment of the Federal High Court which had earlier upheld the activities of the  organisation.
