Bakers in Nigeria,  under the auspices of Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN), have decried what they described as “arbitrary increase of flour prices in the country.”

The bakers also appealed to the Federal Government to find a lasting solution to the problem of incessant rise in the prices of baking ingredients, claiming that their members “are dying in silence.“

The bakers have also concluded arrangement to down tools for one week, effective from Tuesday, as part of their warning to the Federal Government, after which may come an indefinite withdrawal of service from members of the association.

The national caretaker committee chairman of the association, Mr Simeon Abanulor, while speaking with newsmen in Lagos, on Wednesday, stated that the price of flour had become a source of worry to bakers.

The chairman stated that, “ Flour price was increased in December 2010 and that between then and May 2011, the price has gone up again by another 15 per cent , forcing many of the bakers to close operation.

He appealed to the Federal Government to “take measures that will cushion the effect of baking ingredients, particularly flour , which serves as a major ingredient for baking.”

The bakers‘ chairman also allayed the fears of millions of consumers of the everyday food that “we have no intention of increasing the prices of bread again. That is why we are calling on the government to intervene.”

On what the government could do to cushion the effect of the rising cost of the baking ingredients, Abanulor suggested that government should remove or reduce the tariff on imported baking materials.
