AT least 34 people died in an auto accident that occurred at Kilometre 14, on the Akure-Owo Expressway in Ondo State on Monday.

The accident which involved two commercial buses and one articulated lorry was said to have happened at about 7.30 p.m.

It was gathered that the two commercial buses, which were on top speed, were trying to overtake each other when they had a collision with the articulated lorry heading towards the Owo end of the road.

The articulated lorry marked Abuja XN 769 ABC and one of the buses that first hit it instantly burst into flames and the occupants of the vehicles were completely burnt.

However, the bus that was attempting to overtake was not burnt but all the occupants of the ill-fated vehicle also died in the accident.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ondo State Command, Adeniran Aremu said 30 people died in the accident.

Aremu said the bodies of the victims were removed from the scene of the accident and deposited in the mortuary of the state specialist hospital, Akure.

But the Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr John Meheux, said 32 people died on the spot in the accident.

He said the report filed by officers drafted to the scene of the accident revealed that 32 persons lost their lives.

The FRSC sector commander explained that all the 14 persons in the first bus, a Toyota Hiace and the two occupants of the articulated lorry which it crashed into, got burnt beyond recognition.

He said all the 18 passengers and the driver in the second Toyota Hiace bus died while three others sustained serious injuries.
