RESIDENTS of Effurun and Warri in Delta State were thrown into mourning, on Thursday, following the killing of four persons, including a bank accountant and one of his customers by robbers.

The victims were the latest casualties of robbery incidents, which had been prevalent in the state in recent times.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the four-man robbery gang struck at about 1.10 p.m on the Effurun-Sapele road in Uvwie Local Government Area of the state, after trailing the accountant of a bank, identified as A. Kelechi and shot him dead in his ash colour Nissan Sunny car with registration number EP 343 KRD.

After killing Kelechi, it was gathered that the robbers also shot dead one S. Clement in his red colour Toyota Carina E with registration number AQ 357 KPE, who was said to have withdrawn an undisclosed amount of money from a bank in the area.

Security sources disclosed that the robbers, who shot sporadically in their attempt to escape, further killed one Josiah Damodu on his okada and a yet-to-be identified woman.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that several people sustained injuries in their attempt to escape, while one Kalu sustained bullet wounds and was rushed to a nearby military hospital.

It was observed that while the robbery lasted, there was no response from policemen or soldiers at a nearby military post.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Charles Muka, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident and promised to get back to the Nigerian Tribune but did call back at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile,THE Kogi State police command has killed two notorious armed robbers who often operated on the Lokoja-Abuja federal road.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) , Kogi State police command, Mr Ajayi Okasanmi, who disclosed this to newsmen on Wednesday said members of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SAS) gunned them down at about 12 noon on Wednesday.

He disclosed that on that day, the robbers, numbering over five, barricaded the road near Banda village and robbed travellers of their belongings.

According to him, the quick response by the SAS led to the killing of the two robbers while others escaped into the bush.

Items recovered from them were two locally made pistols, charms and other dangerous weapons.

In another development, an unidentified police corporal was killed on Wednesday when gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, bombed a police station at Ogori in Ogori/Magongo Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the hoodlums stormed the area in the night, fired sporadically into the air before invading the police station.

It was further learnt that the robbers bombed the armoury and carted away all the arms and ammunition. The policeman was gunned down when he attempted to engage the hoodlums in a gun battle.

Though the PPRO confirmed the incident, he said information about it was still sketchy as he was yet to be officially briefed on the matter.

Meanwhile, Armed robbers, at about 8.30p.m. on Wednesday, unleashed terror at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos making away $600,000 (N95 million).

The robbers, having beaten all security checks around the airport, headed straight to the area where bureau de change operators carried out their business and started shooting sporadically to scare away people.

In the melee, a female passenger was hit by stray bullet while all airport users, including passengers waiting to catch their flights and those arriving scampered for safety.

The armed robbers subsequently robbed the bureau de change operators of $600, 000.

However, efforts made to confirm the development from the airport police command proved abortive as the officer spoken to said he was not yet aware of the incident.

But a bureau de change operator who preferred anonymity, confirmed the robbery.

The female passenger who was shot had since been rushed to the hospital for treatment and was yet to be discharged as of the time of filing this report.

However, another version of the story had it that the robbers trailed a passenger to the airport and in the process of dispossessing him of his money, they shot a woman.
