Court restrains Ogun PDP from conducting congresses

An Ogun State High Court sitting in Ilaro has restrained the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from conducting its congresses scheduled to commence tomorrow.

Justice M.A. Dipeolu, in an interlocutory injunction granted to the applicants which included Senator Tunde Osholake, Elder Yemi Akinwonmi and Mr Adewale Sunmola the court also restrained the PDP and six others from presenting or holding out any other group or persons other than the claimants as the harmonised executive member of the party, pending the hearing and determination of the suit.

In the suit no. M/53/2011, the acting national chairman of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje and the its vice chairman in the South-West zone, Alhaji Tajudeen Oladipo, Mr Uche Secondus, Mr Olusola Oke, the legal adviser to the party were the respondents.

It will be recalled that a Federal High Court in Lagos had granted another faction in the party led by Dayo Soremi similar injunction.

The injunction also restrained the national executives of the party and six others from constituting a transition
committee, reconciliation group, harmonisation executive members of the Ogun State PDP to conduct primaries, congresses or undertake any other functions of the state harmonised executive member led by Senator Osholake, pending the hearing and determination of the suit.

The applicants presented to the court six exhibits as evidence that Senator Osholake was nominated as the chairman, Elder Yemi Akinwonmi as secretary and Adewale Sunmola as the vice chairman of the Ogun State harmonised executive committee as directed by the Party National Working Committee (NWC), in a letter dated July 30, 2010.

“By virtue of letter dated August 8, 2010 directing the harmonisation of the executive committee of the Ogun State chapter of PDP, the claimants have been nominated and elected and are performing their functions as executive and officers of the Ogun State chapter of PDP,” the judge said.
