FEW hours after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) suspended its two-month old indefinite and comprehensive strike, another round of strike action looms in the Universities Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and associated institutions, as workers of the institutes threatened to down tool if the Federal Government failed to offset their accumulated arrears.

The Senior Staff Association of the Research Institutes and Associated Institutions (SSAUTHRIAI), in a letter addressed to Secretary to the Government of the Federation and signed by M.O. Akinade, general secretary, a copy of which was made available to the Nigerian Tribune, frowned on the carefree attitude of the Federal Government to their plight and charged it to act fast or face indefinite strike action.

The union, in the letter with headline: “Re Notice of 15 days ultimatum to pay 12 months arrears to workers in Research Institutes and Allied Institutions” and dated February 1, 2012, said “Sir, further to air letter, Ref. No. SSAUTHRIAI/SGF/1/2 of December 28, 2011, on the above subject matter and because of members on this sensitive matter, I am directed by the National Executive Council of SSAUTHRIAI to give an extension of seven days ultimatum.”

“The extension of 7 days ultimatum is effective from Thursday, 2nd February, 2012 within which to pay the 12 months arrears failing which the entire workers in Research Institutes in Nigeria will embark on an indefinite strike action,” the letter submitted.
