Ogun govt scraps TASUED

The first University of Education in Nigeria, the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijebu-Ode, will cease to exist henceforth, following the resolve of the Ibikunle Amosun-led government in Ogun State to scrap the institution in the best interest of the state.

The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Segun Odubela, said this on Wednesday, during a press conference in Abeokuta.

He disclosed that the decision was the fallout of the report of a special ad hoc committee set up by the State Executive Council to review the report of the visitation panel to the institution.

The institution was established by the immediate past administration in the state in January, 2004.

Odubela added that all the four Information and Communication Technology polytechnics also established by the Gbenga Daniel-led government would be merged under one umbrella to be known as Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa.

The three other polytechnics in Saapade, Ijebu-Igbo and Itori, would now be campuses of the institute.

Odubela said that the state government had to take the step to bring back the lost glory of education in the state.

He noted that the university would now metamorphose into an Institute of Education in the Faculty of Education of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye.

In his reaction, the Student Union president of TASUED, Abdulai Oyekanmi, said that the present government should be concerned with building the education sector, than "killing" it.

He explained that OOU was a conventional institution while TASUED was a specialised institution.

He said, "It's glaring that, TASUED is the first university of Education in Nigeria and second in Africa, is not debate able considering the quality of graduates the institution had turned out since its establishment seven years ago."
