Less than 10 months into the seventh assembly, the Borno State House of Assembly Speaker, Honourable Goni Ali Modu, has been impeached following what his colleagues described as acts of misdemeanour which include inaccessibility, arrogance and constant romance with the executive.

He was replaced by Honourable Abdulkareem Adam representing Guzamala state constituency in Northern Borno.

The impeachment followed a motion for the dissolution of the positions of the speaker and deputy speaker by Honourable Ayemu Gwasha representing Damboa state constituency and supported by 21 out of the 28 members of the Borno assembly.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that shortly after the new speaker was nominated and elected, the impeached deputy speaker, Inusa Gamandi Danladi, was returned to office through a motion by the member representing Gwoza state constituency, Honourable Ahmed Usman Jaha.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after his election, the new speaker said his election was an act of God and promised he would do everything possible to ensure unity in the assembly so as to move the state forward.

Some staff of the assembly who did not want their names in print told the Nigerian Tribune that with the impeachment of the former speaker, the executive would have it tough with the new assembly.

According to them, “The new Speaker cannot control the house as the former, because he would only work with what the members are going to dictate to him, and that is the truth if you know Hon. Abdulkareem Adam very well.”
