The end of gas flaring in the country is in sight, as the Federal Government approved the sum of $400 million to procure equipment in order to realise the dream.

President Goodluck Jonathan made the disclosure at the second South-South Economic Summit in Asaba, Delta State, on Thursday, noting that oil remained a blessing.

Represented by the vice-president, Alhaji Namadi Sambo, the president said “in many parts of the world, oil has resulted in creating rivalry, greed and even worst, but oil can also be a source of blessing. Several developed countries do not have oil but develop robust economies.”
According to him, he had vision to develop the country, saying that his administration was poised to develop a country without oil.

Jonathan stressed the need for infrastructure, which, he noted, was key to realistic development, adding that the government was considering a design of East/West railway and the third Niger Bridge.

He said about 25 new locomotives had been acquired by the government, adding that arrangement had been firmed up with General Motors to fabricate locomotives in the country, as he assured that the East-West road would soon be completed.

In transforming the South-South and Nigeria, the president said “we can confidently say yes, we can! We are implementing revolutionary programmes for us to transform our economy.

“We must address some programmes that limit our growth,” he said.
