Five suspected armed robbers, on Thursday afternoon, killed two policemen and a member of staff of Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State, carting away millions of naira meant for the payment of salary of the local government employees.

Witnesses said the police had escorted the staff of the finance department of the local government  to withdraw the unspecified amount of money at a new generation bank in Maiduguri, but were waylaid by the robbers on the Magumeri-Gubio highway.

A staff of the local government told the Nigerian Tribune  on condition of anonymity that the armed robbers who drove in a white Toyota Starlet saloon car at about 2.30 p.m., intercepted the vehicle conveying the police escort and the local government officials.

“They brandished sophisticated guns and shot the victims before they took away all the money that was withdrawn from the bank,” the staff said.

When asked if the robbers trailed the victims from the local government, the chairman said “nobody can tell you from where the gunmen came…the unfortunate thing had happened because lives have been lost and colossal amount of money robbed.”

He said he had informed top officials of the Borno State government and security agencies. “We have also recovered the dead bodies for burial,” he said.

Police spokesman  in the state, Mr Gideon Jubrin, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident.

Nigerian Tribune recalls that similar robbery incidences were carried out early this year when some armed robbers killed and took away the salaries of Jere, Kaga, Shani, and kala-Balge local government areas.

Salary snatching

This is unfurtunate. The only to stop thud salary s snatching and frequent lose of life is by instructing all staff to open an account with bank and salary paid in. But this system of collecting and paying cash is an old system and pave way for corruption. The state or local government should fine a means of knowing the extert number of employee ask them each to open account with the bank of his or her choice. With this the salary and lose of life will. People killing are heartless and dont think of hereafter.

Cash lite Economy is better

The Escort, the Local govt Finance officers and the Chairman should be quizzed. Recent stories about bank robberies have shown that insiders could be working for the robbers. Idris Wada Saleh, I quite agree with you. Why cant the local govt workers have their various bank accounts??? Its good, if not compulsory, to go CASH LITE!!!!

It is unfortunate at this age our local governments are still been run by backward and uncivilized administrators and politicians. I think they have lost all common sense in modern day facilities around them, I wonder where this local government will be when Federal Government implements cashless policy that is around the corner. For the Local Government Employees whose monthly entitlement were taken away, take solace in God for His provision for your families, Ee yaaa!

Very insulting event. In this day and age these men are still paying salaries in cash? When will they stop portraying Nigeria as the most backward country of all? They are so fixed with their cattle rearing mentality that they never care to update themselves..... and afterwards, they bomb other hardworking Nigerians in the name of....
