The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee, on Thursday, approved the appointment of the Lagos-based human rights activist, Femi Falana, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s lawyer, Rotimi Jacobs, Professor Yemi Akinseye-George and 22 others into the position of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, who also double as the secretary of the committee, Sunday Olorundahunsi, said that the new appointees had been carefully screened and had been found worthy to occupy the exalted position of SAN, adding that the exercise of appointing them was rancour free.

Out of the 25 appointees, two were chosen from the academics. They are Professor Yemi Akinseye-George and Professor Dakas Clement James Dakas.

Others who made the list are Joy Okungbowa Adesina, Chief (Mrs) Connie-Jean Aremu, Mahmud Abubakar Magaji, Ogwu James Onoja, Garuba Usman Tetengi, Henty Oghogho Ogbodu, Selekwoi Larry, Abenny O. Mohammed, Charles Nwanne Obishai, Luke Chukwudi Illogu, Francis Chuk Agbu, Paul C. Ananaba, Akinlaja Dayo Moses, Ahmed Raji, Adekunle Theophilus Oyesanya, Femi Falana and Rotimi Oluseyi Oguneso.

Also in the list are Oluseye Samuel Opasanya, Aduroja Claudius Olumuyiwa, Aliyu Umaru, Illo Katune Sanusi, Rotimi Jacobs and Ndukwe A. Nnawuchi.

The swearing in will take place when the Supreme Court resumes from its annual vacation.

Baba James, you talk as if you are a saint. You fail to realise that every accused person has human - rights to a proper defence in courts. The newly appointed SANs in Nigeria have excelled as attorneys defending human rights. We Nigerians must learn to celebrate our legal geniuses when crowned as SANs. You don't acquire SAN - status without outstanding performance record in legal profession. l wish the new SANs well and thanks for defending the human race.

The process of appointing SANs need to be revisited. For example, 71 persons were shortlisted for final interview and only 24 of them were awarded the honor. Were there objective, verifiable and concrete reasons for rejecting the other 47 applicants at the final interview? The current process leaves a lot of room for manipulation and godfatherism and is certainly not objective enough. The LPPC should come up with objective criteria for conferring the honor that will not leave any room for manipulation and discretion. Every commentator here thinks Femi Falana should have been conferred with the honor earlier because he has been very outspoken on national issues. I respectfully disagree. SAN is designed to be a reward for excellence in legal practice especially in the appellate courts. Maybe Femi Falana just attained that excellence; hence, his present recognition. In other words, SAN should not be conferred on a lawyer merely because he is recognized as a human right activist or because he is popular with the masses. The commentator is an attorney at law and a board certified specialist in bankruptcy law in the State of California. He is also licensed to practice law in Nigeria, England and Wales.
