Any local government chairman in Akwa Ibom State found wanting in performance of his duties will be sacked without hesitation, Governor Godswill Akpabio has warned.

Akpabio gave the warning at the banquet hall of the state Government Lodge in Uyo while inaugurating 31 newly elected council chairmen and their deputies.

The governor said his administration was poised to restore the glory days of the third tier of government by making them perform their constitutional role as against the widely held belief that they had become redundant in the delivery of dividends of democracy.

“They say that local governments in the country are not working, but I want you to prove that they can work, just as your state government is working.”

“So any of you who feels that he is not ready to assist me in making the councils work should better resign now, because I am going to force you to work.

“Local governments in Akwa Ibom would no longer be a place where people go to steal money that should be used for developing the grass roots, “he said.

To make this effective, Akpabio disclosed that a monitoring team would be put in place to evaluate their performance, noting that it would no longer be “business as usual.”

He also warned against executive/legislative rift common in most councils and urged them to emulate the cordial relationship between him and the legislators in the state.
