NOBEL Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has identified regional cooperation and healthy competition among federating states as pre-requisites for the onward movement of Nigeria.

Soyinka identified this while interacting with students of various tertiary institutions within Nigeria in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the extent of disunity witnessed in the country in recent times.

“If this country must forge ahead as one entity, we must encourage regional cooperation and healthy competition among the federating units,” he stated.

Soyinka, who was in the state to witness the transformation activities of Governor Godswill Akpabio, wondered why the Federal Government should not allow states with independent power plants to generate and distribute their power, saying that such would expedite the stable power supply that the country had been agitating for years.

Lamenting the ordeals of youths in the mandatory one year service to the nation, he called for  military training for members of the National Youths Service Corpsn (NYSC), reasoning that such training would help respective corps members in self defence in crisis ridden state in the North.

He regretted that corruption had permeated the fabric of the Nigerian polity and called on the leaders to rise up and find lasting solutions to the challenges.

REGIONAL INTEGRATION

If only we are blessed with more Soyinkas. Having said that, Soyinka should first integrate with former president Obasanjo for the effective regional cooperation of the Oduduwa region. Obasanjo on his own should respect Soyinka for his scholarly prowess while Soyinka should respect Obasanjo as a former president and now a World leader.
If the SouthWest gets her cooperation w'righly, other region, mostly the Middle belt would be in a position for healthy competition.
The World is waiting to see how Wole Soyinka and Obasanjo's integration would rub on other regions. It is not enough to meet with students!
