Oko prisons jailbreak handiwork of inmates -Edo CP

EDO State Commissioner of Police, Olayinka Balogun, said on Monday, that the jailbreak at Oko medium security prisons in Benin City, the state capital, was the handiwork of inmates and not the result of any invasion or explosion.

Balogun, who addressed journalists on the development, however, said the state police command was still waiting for more details from the prison authorities regarding the jailbreak which occurred in the early hours of Sunday.

The Edo State police boss said “there was no invasion of any kind, the escape bid was purely the handiwork of the prison inmates.”

He said he was shown two holes the inmates bored through the cell walls and one through the fence, just as he added that the situation was immediately put under control as the two prison inmates who had earlier escaped through the holes bored from within were rearrested.

According to Balogun, security had been intensified in and around the prisons environment.
