5 killed, 7 injured in Bauchi accident

FIVE people were confirmed dead in a fatal accident which occurred at Turum village in Bauchi on the Bauchi/ Maiduguri road on Monday night, while seven others were injured in the accident involving a Mitsubishi bus and an articulated truck.

Nigerian Tribune gathered on Tuesday that the accident occurred as the driver of the 14-seater Mitsubishi bus, driving on top speed, collided with the articulated truck, which was parked by the road side.

According to information obtained from eyewitnesses, the accident happened at about 7:30 p.m. when the bus with registration number XA657GW rammed into the stationary truck with registration number XG810JJA.

The witnesses informed that the dead were made up of two males, two females and a child, while two people escaped unhurt in the accident.

According to an eyewitness, who simply identified himself as Jibrin, “The Mitsubishi bus driver was going on a very top speed and in an attempt to overtake a car in his front, he collided with the trailer which was parked by the roadside. Maybe the trailer had fault, I cannot specifically say but it has been there for many hours before the accident.”

While confirming the accident to journalists in his office, on Tuesday, the Bauchi State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Olatunji Sunday, attributted the accident to overspeeding on the part of the Mitsubishi bus driver and warned road users, especially drivers, against overspeeding.
