‘US grants Nigeria $500m to fight HIV/AIDS’ •As World Bank also donates $5m to Nasarawa

The partnership between Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence and the United States of America’s (USA) Department of Defence has led to the building of a Defence Reference Laboratory, the first of its kind in the sub-region, which is part of the USA’s $500 million aid to fight the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV/AIDS) and other related diseases.
This disclosure was made on Thursday, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, by the USA ambassador, Terence McCulley, while speaking at the commissioning of the project by the Minister of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada, who described the laboratory as a breakthrough for Nigeria, in her bid to fight some of the terminal diseases buffeting the citizenry.
In the same vein, over $5 million has been donated by the World Bank programme development project to Nasarawa State, out of the $225 million credit approved for Nigeria with effect from June, 2011.
This is also in the bid to ameliorate the risk of HIV infections, by scaling up prevention and interventions measures and increase access to, and utilisation of HIV testing, counseling and support services.
The state project manager and acting executive director of AIDS Control Agency( NASACA), Ibrahim Azara, revealed to newsmen on Thursday, at a stakeholders’ workshop in Lafia.
According to him, the fund, when finally accessed, would be used in three components to expand the public sector and society response, as well as strengthen mechanism and coordination, adding that the first, second and third components would gulp the sum of $1,500,000, $1,750,000 and $1,750,000 each.
