AS houses, churches, schools and farm-lands continue to submerge across nine local government councils in Kogi State, following overflow of the River Niger, the Kogi State command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has embarked on house-to-house sensitisation, urging the people to evacuate the area.

The state deputy commander of the corps, who led the team to the affected area on Wednesday, said they embarked on the sensitisation, as many houses had been submerged. It was to give red signal to the people around the flood-prone area.

According to him, they were also there to alert them to the release of the water from Shiroro dam and others, saying that, if it happened, the volume of water would be higher and all houses in the area, including the road, would soon be submerged.

He added that, “this is the reason we are here; to demarcate the danger zone and move people away from the area ,” adding that, they had asked them to move to the primary school, which is a little bit uphill, pending when they arrived at a solution.

“If we ask them to continue to stay around, we don’t know when the water would be released and the volume that will come.

The stakeholders are meeting today concerning the excess water in the area , in order to see how they can relocate the people to a more safer place,” he said.

Meanwhile, groups and individuals have appealed to the state government to relocate the victims as matter of urgency.

The chairman of Okunmi Oworo Development Association, Mallam Umaru Halladu, who made this appeal while speaking with newsmen on Wednesday, in Lokoja, called on the state government to relocate the people of the affected communities, as many of the them do not have where to lay their heads, as flood had taken over their areas.
