THE Federal Government has announced the selection of 101 First Cass honours degree candidates as recipients of 2012 Presidential Special Scholarship for Innovation and Development.

The awardees will be sent abroad to study in the top 25 universities in the world up to Masters and PhD levels.

Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu  Rufa’i, while addressing the winners of the maiden edition of the award in Abuja, on Monday, said the selection process was transparent and based on merit.

According to her, a total of 1,300 first class honours degree candidates from recognised and approved universities across the country applied for the scholarship in which 449 of them were shortlisted.

The 101 candidates emerged successful out of the 449 candidates shortlisted after sitting for a computer-based test contracted to an information communication technology (ICT) firm. The result of the aptitude test was immediately announced to them to forestall any form of manipulation.

Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie, assured that the scholarship would be sustained.

I have always believed that first class in one university may be second class in another because standards are never the same in all our universities.Can we have the statistics of how many First class gradutes from how many universities applied,got selected and ultimately won on merit.The release of this details will help in rating products of our universitie.It wil be like the Law Schools where, upon release of call to bar exam we see some Universities like LASU(Iam not a graduate of that school) coming out brilliantly ahead of some hitherto more regarded universities.So please publish these details.
