A former director of  the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Ekiti State, Dr. Tunde Ajayi, has expressed the fear that acting president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, may not be able to effect desirable changes in the polity “because he has been arm-twisted through various agreements reached with powerful stakeholders” before he was allowed to get to the position.

Speaking with journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Friday, Dr. Ajayi, a political scientist and Director of Social Mobilisation Unit of the Office of the Ekiti State governor, said the stakeholders included the National Assembly, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), emirs and the Governors’ Forum.

He expressed surprise that Nigerians were bothered about the “cosmetic” cabinet reshuffle carried out by the acting president, a day after he took over the reins of power, saying that what Jonathan required was total overhaul of the system and not what he described as “a cosmetic application of powder to a rotten face.”

Dr. Ajayi said the former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mike Aondoakaa, should apologise to Nigerians for misleading them “and defending rogues” during his tenure, adding that he should have been sacked by the Acting President instead of being redeployed.

On the role played by the Minister of Information, Professor Dora Akunyili, in the events that led to the emergence of Jonathan as Acting President, Dr. Ajayi said he was not impressed by her “belated action,” adding that the high level of manipulation and individual positioning had made it difficult to assess the character of the major political actors during the impasse.
