Nigerians Advised Against India’s Fake Medical Agents
THE House of Representatives Committee on diaspora on Friday warned Nigerians seeking medical treatment in India to stay away from fake agents, who are parading themselves as middlemen.
The Chairman of the Committee, Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who gave the advice in Abuja averred that, “these middlemen exploit Nigerians in their approach and as well extort money from would-be travellers to India.”
Honourable Dabiri-Erewa added that she got wind of the ugly incidence through the Nigeria High Commission in India saying that, “over 20 per cent of every bill paid by the Nigerian patients goes to these middlemen as commission.”
According to her, “the sharp practice has been an issue of great concern as deposits, which is supposed to be paid in Rupee, which is India’s currency are paid in US dollars.”
She, however, advised that Nigerians seeking medical treatment should contact the Mission to seek information and guidance before embarking on medical procedures, or visit various websites of hospitals in India, noting that from the available data, “over twenty-five thousand Nigerians travel to India every year for medicals, with each spending nothing less than twenty thousand dollars including the cost of their trips and accommodation.”
