The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Martin Ohomoibhi, has defended the country’s position in the election of the chairperson of the African Union at the recently concluded 19th Ordinary Summit of the organisation in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The nation’s support for the candidacy of Dr. Jean Ping, who eventually lost the contest to South African Dr. Nkosazzana Zuma, he said, was not a mistake and the nation was proud even in its decision.

“Although Dr. Zuma won the election, Nigeria is not ashamed of his principled stance to promote unity, solidarity and cohesion in Africa. We are so proud of the outcome and want to be associated with the outcome,” he said.
