On Friday April 27, 2012 when a four-man gang of robbers laid siege to Tegna-Kagara-Kaduna  highways, Niger State dispossessing motorists and commuters alike of their valuables, hardly did  the suspected men of the underworld had the premonition that nemesis would soon catch up with them.

And no sooner the hoodlums started unleashing terror on their victims under the pretence of being policemen, on a routine stop and search duty, than some concerned members of the public tipped off the police at Kagara Police Station under the Niger State Police Command about the criminal activities of the gangsters.

The men of the underworld, who were in police uniform, were in possession of two improvised AK 47 riffles made of green colour painted sticks and one cutlass, among other dangerous weapons.

Police source also stated that one Techno GSM telephone handset, a complete police shirt with its cap and buttons and two pairs of leather sandals were recovered.

The Saturday Tribune further learnt that no sooner the police were informed than the patrol team headed by one Inspector Musa Tanko swung into action and arrived the robbery scene at about 3:45a.m, after which the team engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel.

It was further learnt that the superior gun power of the police patrol team led to the killing of one of the suspected men of the underworld, as the remaining three members of the gang were said to have escaped the scene with gunshot wounds.

An insider police source at the Niger State Criminals Investigations Department, Minna, who did not want his names in prints during a chat with the Saturday Tribune, further disclosed that the corpse of the unidentified suspects had been taken to the mortuary section of the General Hospital, Kagara in Kagara Local Government Area of the state for an autopsy report, just as police investigation into the matter is said to have commenced with a view of tracking down the fleeing three members of the gang.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer, Niger State Police Command, Mr. Richard A. Oguche, has confirmed the incident in a brief interview with the Saturday Tribune on Thursday, highlighting that authorities of the Command had put in place a police patrol team in conjunction with the vigilante group from the communities in the affected areas with a view of fishing out the fleeing suspected robbery gang.

Oguche, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), also noted that sometime in March this year, there were reported cases of incessant robbery attacks on the road users around Taegna-Kaagara-Kaduna highways.

He further recalled that on several occasions in the past that robbery gangs would have disappeared from the scene of robbery before the police could get there.

He, however, expressed delight that the perpetrators of the recent robbery incidence were not so lucky, confirming that one of the suspects was fell by the bullets of the police patrol team.
