The Ogun State House of Assembly has summoned the state Ministry of Housing to appear before it on Tuesday to clarify some issues surrounding the demolition of a building being built by one of its members, Honorable Adijat Oladapo-Adeleye.

It will be recalled that a similar demolition exercise was carried out on a two- bedroom flat boy's quarters on June 10.

The building, which was under construction before the exercise, was located at the back of the official quarters of the legislator, who is representing Ifo 11 State Constituency in the Assembly.

The Assembly had constituted an adhoc committee to investigate the alleged action of some officials of the state government in carrying  out the exercise.

The Director-General, Ogun State Bureau of Urban and Physical Planning (BUPP), Mr. Stephen Adewolu, while appearing before the committee, last Thursday, said its agency committed a procedural error in the demolition of the building, but insisted that the structure was illegal.

Adewolu told the committee headed by Hon. Tunde Edunjobi, that three different contravention notices were served on the building, admitting that his agency did not liase with the Housing Ministry before the demolition.

He said the agency only got a verbal approval to demolish the two-bedroom boys' quarters.

"It’s a learning process, I am sorry, but we had to do what we did to respect the honourable House which passed the laws guiding urban and physical development in the country and the state," Adewolu said.

The BUPP boss submitted that he had not seen the original building plan of the legislative quarters to know whether Hon. Adeleye-Oladapo had contravened a building plan when asked by the chairman of the committee.

One of the members of the panel, Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, representing Odeda State Constituency, declared that the demolition did not follow the rule of law.

"Everything must be done officially. Civil servants should not allow themselves to be caught in the web of politics. They should follow rules and regulation and do things within the ambit of the law," he said.

Adeleye-Oladapo, who also appeared before the panel, insisted that the demolition of the building  had ulterior motive.

"I hold strongly to the belief that it was when they did not meet me at home that they turned the thing to a demolition, especially when our video evidence shows that they came with all manner of weapons and even threatened to harm Hon. Onademuren (Ijebu North East), who challenged them," she said.
